Spotlight on Collectors

There are fans, and then there are the super fans. The ones who really take it to the next level, who line up at 6 am in the cold or breathlessly wait on their laptops all night, eyeballs glued to the screen, for that moment—the moment they can add another prize to their collection.

Collectors come in all types, from action hero enthusiasts to sneaker-heads. Maybe you have a collection somewhere, filled with trinkets and tchotchkes. Maybe it’s gathering dust in the corner of your attic, or maybe you add to it frequently. The point is, you probably collect something. Collecting is universal. To start from nothing and create your own little world; you carve a niche for yourself to make sense of it all.  It makes us feel good, and it helps create order.

Here’s to the collectors—the butterfly collectors and stamp enthusiasts, the comic nerd and the baseball memorabilia fanatic. We love what you do.

These are just a few of our favorites:

16-year-old Benjamin Kickz isn’t your normal high school student. Don’t be fooled by his baby face, because he means serious business. He’s been profiled by publications from Refinery29 to Forbes, and is on track to make $1 million this year by flipping sneakers, which you can get from his store online, but he also makes personal calls. That is, if you’re Travis Scott, DJ Khaled, or any other a-list rapper.

We love his bravado and hustle, but mostly, his encyclopedic knowledge of sneakers and sheer enthusiasm. The kid knows shoes.

It seems like everyone is a fashion blogger these days, but Ida Catherine (@idacath) really takes clothing seriously.

Rather than focusing on current trends, she prefers to stick to 1930s & 1940s dresses, which she collects with palpable enthusiasm. Her attention to detail is stunning. It’s just not what she collects—but how she collects. Her familiarity with every piece is amazing. To her, it’s not just clothing, but a lesson in form and history.

When you were younger, you probably had a few fast-food toys lying around. This guy never stopped collecting them. The sublimely named Percival Reye Lugue has the largest fast-food toy collection in the entire world. After 31 years of collecting, he has over 14,500 toys and counting.

Read his Lucky Peach profile for the scoop on his favorite ones.
