2016 has been quite the wild ride, wouldn’t you say? A lot has happened–including our own foundation, in January of 2016. We’re excited for what’s coming next. But before that, we’d like to end the year with our own first inaugural superlative awards to commend heroic acts and people from the past year.
Without further ado, the 2016 Hero Awards.
1. LEONARDO DICAPRIO’S FIRST OSCAR
Definitely warrants a mention! The leading man finally got his first Oscar for The Revenant. And after two decades of acting and starring in movies like Titantic, Romeo + Juliet, and Catch Me If You Can, we should say–it’s about time.
2. USAIN BOLT & MICHAEL PHELPS AT THE RIO OLYMPICS
We’re awarding 1 hero point to each incredible athlete for their amazing performance in Rio. The athletes competed in their last Olympic Games this year, and both took home gold medals. Perfect endings to their amazing winning streaks. Bravo!
3. SOLAR PANELS
In some very exciting tech news, solar panels became cheaper than fossil fuels this year. This is huge. The (renewable energy) future looks very bright indeed.
4. THE CHICAGO CUBS FINALLY WON
Wow. It finally happened. Being a Cubs fan isn’t easy, especially when your team hasn’t won a World Series since 1908. But this year was finally their year. The curse of the Billy Goat has finally been lifted, and now Steve Bartman can breathe easy.
5. HARRIET TUBMAN ON THE $20
Now this is incredible. Harriet Tubman will be the new face on the $20, and the first woman featured on US currency. Her amazing contributions include freeing hundreds of escaped slaves to freedom on The Underground Railroad, as well as staunchly advocating for women’s rights. We can’t think of a better candidate to replace Andrew Jackson. As for when this switch will occur? Details are still a little hazy, but fingers crossed it’s sooner than later!
And that’s it for our 2016 Hero Awards.
Until next year,
Team Hero Mag
