Replay: April 17, 2016

Lionel Messi is a household name in football today, and he has a long history to justify it. He rose to the top playing for Barcelona throughout the 2000s, and has been known for scoring over half of the shots he takes. Any Barcelona fan is bound to have their own favorite Messi moments.

Messi helped break a number of scoring records for Barcelona. But it wasn’t until their game against Valencia on April 17th, 2016 that he proved he planned on being the very best.

Things weren’t looking up for Barcelona on April 17th.

Valencia was up 3-1, and there was less than a half-hour remaining. Messi had the ball. He approached the goal. He weaved past Valencia’s defenders. He shoots!

The crowd cheered, hopeful for a potential comeback. But when they saw Barcelona’s coach’s reaction, they knew this wasn’t an ordinary goal. Shouts and cheers erupted from the stands as the realization spread that this was his 500th career goal.

Messi ran back in celebration, setting expectations even higher for seasons to come.

I have many years to get better and better, and that has to be my ambition. The day you think there is no improvements to be made is a sad one for any player. –Lionel Messi
