Johnny Depp, King of Antiheroes

Heroes come in all different shapes, forms, and in this case, characters! This week we’re diving into our top 3 favorite Depp roles as we get ready for the release of the final Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, tomorrow. Let’s take a look below at some of our favorite roles this “Jack-of-all-trades” has brought to life on screen!

3. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS: BECAUSE THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF A HERO IS HIS HEART

With its cult following, if there was ever a character that had you all in your feels, Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the melancholy, lonely hearted Edward Scissorhands would be one to make you break out your tissue box.

Edward Scissorhands is a magical fairy tale with gothic overtones and a sweet center. Despite his razor-sharp hands, from the beginning of the movie we are lead to believe that Edward is made to love. His creator had given Edward a heart before he gave him hands which bring us to the question – did he think a heart was more important? Edward was a deeply misunderstood creature. All he longed for was love, affection and friendships. How could you not develop a deep sense of sympathy for him? He was a hero for lonely hearts everywhere. Edward taught us to never be afraid to show who you really are. Sometimes the new normal is the abnormal.

2. MAD HATTER – ALICE IN WONDERLAND: A HERO IS NEVER AFRAID TO SHARE HIS MUCHINESS

Come with me on an adventure to a mythical place called Underland! With his flamboyant vest, obscenely tall hat, and blindingly bright orange colored hair, Johnny Depp takes on the classic character of The Mad Hatter.

Hatter came to life as caricature taking form as a human mood ring, whose skin would change color according to his emotional state shifting between a light-hearted Hatter to a truly mad and intense Hatter. He has his heroic side too, such as always standing up for his dearest friends and always using the power of a smile and some comedy to ease any stressful situation. From the storyline to the dialog, the sets to the costumes, not to mention the hysterics and funny expressions of Hatter, there is never such thing as too much muchiness!

1: JACK SPARROW – PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: BECAUSE HEROES DON’T HAVE TO BE HEROES 24/7

As we get ready for the release of the final Pirates movie, (we’re not crying, you’re crying), we spotlight our favorite swashbuckling underdog, Jack Sparrow.

If anyone could bring life to the legendary rum-loving, overly theatrical, swashbuckling stumbling Jack Sparrow – Pirate of the Seven Sea’s, there was never a doubt that Johnny Depp wouldn’t be up to the task. Taking his inspiration for the character from Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richards, Depp turned Sparrow into a pirate rock god in his own right.

Dreadlocks, gold teeth, braided goatee, over emphasized jewelry and tattered clothing were layered to make his eccentric over the top look. What Depp brings to this character is a genuine sense of unapologetic obnoxiousness and adventure. We are taken on a journey through explosions and fights with skeleton pirate ghosts while Sparrow and crew go on the hunt to find cursed hidden treasure. We also see ghosts from beyond the depths of the dark seas and storybook mermaids. In the end, our hero Sparrow prevails getting the ship, the treasure and of course – the rum, teaching us that persistence is everything! If you never give up, no matter how tough the journey, magical (and sometimes mystical things) can happen!
